GUILTY - - - But He Didn’t Do a Thing

Joe Malone

Ben Putinoff was once a faithful member of the New Testament church, but he allowed his interest in his secular employment to gain first place in his heart. Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one. and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

In his indifference to the cause of the Lord Jesus Christ, he dreamed a dream. He dreamed he was arrested and charged with attempting to put the church out of business. He always paid his obligations to his creditors as they came due. He was very prompt in paying his taxes. He did physical harm to nobody.  However, when he came to trial, he confessed.

“Ben Puttinoff, you are charged with attempting to put the church for which Christ died out of business. Are you guilty or not guilty?”

“Not guilty,” pleaded Ben Puttinoff.; “I didn’t do a thing!”

“Guilty as charged,” ruled the judge. “He has confessed to the most effective way ever devised to terminate the work of the church. He confessed that he didn’t do a thing.”

Ben Puttinoff was thus found guilty of forestalling the gospel, of discouraging the worshiping of God and the study of the Bible, and the proper spiritual development of the home. How? Ben Puttinoff just didn’t do a thing.

Ben Puttinoff was thus guilty of the blight of backsliding, of infecting the people around him, including his own family, with that abominable influence. He didn’t do anything bad --- he just didn’t do a thing.

Ben Puttinoff went to the judgment hoping to get by on the basis that he had done nothing bad. He had intended to do good things, but he had been just too busy making a living and resting on Sunday from a week’s work. He just put it off.

He is a very dangerous type of offender. He is dangerous to his own soul, to the soul of his wife and the souls of his children, and he endangers the  life of the church and the well being of the community.

Beware of following the course of Ben Puttinoff Jesus taught that “he that is not with me is against me” (Matthew 12:30). Also, “lo him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin”  (James 4:17).
