MAKING THINGS RIGHT

One of the most difficult things a person must do when weighing the decision to become a Christian is to make things right. If someone has grown up with the idea that any conduct is permissible as long as you can get away with it and no one finds out, such a person wanting to become a Christian, must plan how to correct those wrongs and make them right.

In Old Testament days the prophet Samuel, when ending his responsibilities with the Israelite nation, wanted to be certain he was right with the people so he said: “Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? And I will restore it you.” (1 Samuel 12:3). The verdict of the people was returned, “And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought from any man’s hand” (1 Samuel 12:4). Samuel, a man of integrity, proved trustworthy in matters of government, and he also stood ready to make things right.

In New Testament days, a man interested enough in Jesus to climb a tree to see him better, decided to make some serious changes in his life. He had a great love for money; making it and keeping it. However, when Jesus came to his house his love for money changed to a love for Jesus and respect for His ways. With that change of affection, his love for money didn’t mean so much to him any more so he decided to make things right. “And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold” (Luke 19:8). Zacchaeus was a man of integrity. He stood ready not only to pay back what he had wrongfully taken but to make restitution four times the amount. Could anyone say Zacchaeus had not repented? What would we say of Zacchaeus if he had kept the money he had gained by cheating? Would we not say his change of heart was questionable and his love for money unchanged?

Making things right is not easy. It is the right thing to do. To repent of our sins does mean to change our ways but included in this is a sincere effort to make things right as much as we possibly can. If we do this then we will be what Jesus wants us to be, men and women of integrity; trustworthy, worthy to wear the name Christian. ---Dan Payne
