The Bible #1
David A. Bass
The Bible is the greatest book in the world because it is the word of God! The Bible does not just contain God’s word, it is the word of God. In 2 Timothy 3:16 the apostle Paul says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” The word “inspiration” means, ‘God breathed.’ Peter declared, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). The Bible is truly “the Book of Books!”
The Bible is actually 66 separate books written by over 40 different men (from Moses to John) over a period of about 1500 years. There are two major divisions in the Bible - the Old Testament which was written in Hebrew and Chaldaic and the New Testament which was written in the Greek lanuage.
The Old Testament can be divided into five sections. The first section of the Old Testament is called the Pentateuch or the Books of Law. These first five books, Genesis through Deuteronomy, begin with creation and cover a period of about 1500 years. In these first five books we find the history of creation, the flood, God’s chosen people, slavery in Egypt, the deliverance from Egypt, wanderings in the wilderness andthe giving of God's law for the Jewish people.
The second section is called History because it contains a history of the Jews (the Children of Israel). There are twelve books of history from Joshua to Esther.
The third section contains the five books of Poetry. Here we read of Job and his steadfastness in affliction; we also find songs, poems and rules for a happy life. The books of Poetry consist of Job to the Song of Solomon.
The fourth section we call the Major Prophets. These books contain numerous prophecies concerning the tribes of Israel and Judah as well as prophecies concerning the coming of the Saviour and the establishment of the kingdom (church). We call these “major” prophets because of the length of each book. Isaiah through Daniel comprise the Major Prophets.
The fifth section of the Old Testament is identified as the Minor Prophets and contains twelve books. It is called the “minor” prophets because these books are short in length. These prophets continue to foretell upcoming events concerning Israel and also concerning Jesus and his kingdom. The Minor Prophets are Hosea through Micah.
