The Bible   #4

David A. Bass

This study will conclude this series of articles on the Bible.  Today we will continue our overview of the books of the New Testament.

COLOSSIANS sets forth the preeminence of Christ and is an encouragement to resist destructive influences because of the Christian’s relationship to Christ.  This book was written while Paul was imprisoned in Rome about 62 A.D.  The epistles of Paul to the THESSALONIANS were written about 51 A.D.  Christians are exhorted to be faithful and holy in view of the fact that one day the Lord will come and we will be judged.  1 AND 2 TIMOTHY were written by Paul to his “son in the faith,” Timothy.  The first letter sets forth the qualifications of elders and deacons in the church as well as the work of the preacher, while the second continues to encourage Timothy to remain faithful. These letters were written between 66 - 68 A.D.  The book of TITUS, also written by Paul, gives instructions to Titus concerning the church on the island of Crete.  It was written about 67 A.D.  Paul’s letter to PHILEMON was written about 62 A.D. to encourage Philemon to take back Onesimus, a runaway slave who had come to Rome where Paul was a prisoner.  HEBREWS declares the law of Christ to be far superior to the Old Testament law and encourages the young Hebrew Christians not to leave Christianity and return to Judaism.  This letter was written about 63 A.D.  Possibly Paul wrote this letter, but the authorship is uncertain.   The book of JAMES was written by the brother of Jesus and Jude between 45 and 50 A.D.  This letter deals with practical Christian living.  Notice carefully chapter two’s section on faith!  1 PETER is written to those Christianswho had fled Asia Minor because of persecution.  This letter was written admonishing these Christians to have courage and to trust in the power of God.  These two letters were written by the apostle Peter about A.D. 65. 2 PETER warns of false teachers who had crept into the church and urges every Christian to hold fast to the word of God.  1 JOHN emphasizes God’s love for us and our love for one another.  We are also reminded of the wonderful relationship that we have with God as Christians.  The author of this book and the following epistles was the apostle John, the son of Zebedee.  These three books were written about A.D. 90.  2 JOHN is a warning against false teachers and our having fellowship with them.  3 JOHN is addressed to “Gaius” and encourages him to continue his previous acts of (kindness) fellowship with fellow believers. JUDE contains an exhortation to remain faithful and to beware of false teachers and to defend the truth.  This letter was written by Jude, the brother of James and probably our Lord’s brother.  The final book of the New Testament is REVELATION which was written by the apostle John probably about 69 or 70 A.D. while he was in exile on the island of Patmos.  This letter is addressed to the seven churches of Asia who were being severely persecuted.  Figurative language is used to set forth a message of hope, faith and comfort and that Christ and his people will ultimately triumph!
